Cattle Appearance
All categories of cattle will be inspected to ensure they are bright, alert, in good health and condition.


Movements and cattle traceability
During the inspection of the cattle, the inspector will check that the cattle are tagged correctly.  Herd records will also be checked, which can be in the following format:

  • Herd Book
  • Kingswood
  • Farm Wizard
  • Summit

Calves and calf husbandry
During the inspection of calves the inspector will assess the calf pen suitability and cleanliness, the age of the calves when they are group housed, whether or not the calves are muzzled and tethered and if they can easily see and make contact with each other.  The producer will be asked about the frequency for inspecting the calves.

Biosecurity
Biosecurity measures must be available on the farm to minimise the spread of disease within the farm and between other farms.

Isolation and disease control
The isolation facility must meet the follwing requirements:

  1. must have a separate air space from other accommodation and should not allow contact with any other animal
  2. the internal walls are washable up to a height of at least 2 meters
  3. restraining facilities and artificial lighting are available
  4. must be capable of being available within three hours

Medicines
The inspector will ask about the method used on farm for identifying treated animals, the storage facility for medicines and the suitability of the person administering the medicines.  The medicines seen on farm must be approved for use in the UK and the sharps container must also be available for inspection.
