- Use of Goads and Sticks - these should not be used except where guidance allows, a stick can only be used as an extension to the arm
- Suitable bedding - bedding should be provided at all times for the type of animal being transported
- Stocking Densities - animals must be stocked according to size and weight to ensure that they are not overcrowded or too loosely stocked
- Segregation
- Horned and unhorned animals must not be transported in the same compartment unless they have been reared together
- Different species must be kept separately
- Animals of different sizes should be kept separate unless reared together
- Fractious and/or excitable livestock must be dealt with in the safest way
- Farm assured and non-farm assured stock must be individually identified or segregated during transport
- Ventilation - the vehicle should have an adequate source of ventilation
- Unfit/Injured Livestock - Veterinary advice should be sought if an animal is unfit, ill or injured prior to or during transportation, to ensure that it is fit for travel
- Rest Periods - drivers should be aware of the rest periods required for transporting livestock
- Cleansing & Disinfecting - this should be carried out routinely using approved disinfectants
