Vehicle Construction

All vehicles must be constructed, maintained and operated so as to avoid injury and suffering of the animals. The inspector will check the vehicle to ensure that it meets the required standard:

  • Loading/Unloading facilities
    • gates, ramps, floors, decks and all other parts of the vehicle must be free from projections and sharp edges
    • where necessary drivers must have access to pig boards

  • Ramps/Flooring
    • floors and ramps should be non-slip
    • ramps angles should not exceed the legal requirements
    • flooring should prevent the leakage of faeces and urine

  • Partitions - these must be provided if pen lengths exceed the following,
    • Calves - 2.5 meters
    • Pigs/sheep & goats - 3.1 meters

  • Inspection facilities - the haulier must be able to check each compartment on the vehicle to check livestock during transport

  • Lighting - temporary or permanent lighting should be available at all times to allow for the inspection of animals within the vehicle

  • Logo usage - these should only be displayed on the vehicle for current members of the scheme
